Prolotherapy Q & A

What is Prolotherapy?

Prolotherapy is a simple, safe, and effective regenerative procedure that signals the body to repair and revitalize degenerated and damaged tissues, including injured tendons, joints, and ligaments. The goals of prolotherapy are to reduce pain, restore structural integrity, and improve natural function.

This can be achieved by inducing a temporary, low-grade inflammatory reaction in the affected area, which draws fibroblasts (healing tissues) to the area and speeds up the repair of collagen, resulting in stronger connective tissues and ligaments.

BENEFITS:

Prolotherapy is a procedure that utilizes a solution of dextrose (a simple sugar), injected into the tissues, where damage has occurred; such as an injured ligament, tendon, or joint. This helps promote healing, strengthening injured areas and some key benefits are:

  • alleviates pain and stiffness
  • promotes the healing of injured and degenerated tissues
  • improves circulation and nerve function
  • revitalize the stability, strength, and mobility of muscles and joints

SOME OF THE CONDITIONS PROLOTHERAPY CAN HELP:

  • Osteoarthritis
  • TMJ (temporomandibular joint) syndrome
  • Tennis elbow (Lateral Epicondylitis)
  • Golfer's Elbow (Medial Epicondylitis)
  • Patellofemoral Syndrome
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Pelvic Instability
  • Sacroiliac joint disorders
  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Shoulder Injuries
  • Shoulder tendinitis / Rotator Cuff Syndrome
  • Hypermobility Syndrome
  • Whiplash Complex

How Does Prolotherapy Work?

The prolotherapy procedure introduces a pro-healing solution, typically dextrose, into the damaged tissue. The solution signals the body to initiate an orchestrated cascade of natural healing processes organized into three phases.

1st phase: Inflammatory phase which lasts 3-5 days. Involves multiple agents, including cytokines, prostaglandins, inflammatory cells, lymphocytes, and macrophages which work together to remove damaged tissue and protect healthy tissue.

2nd phase: Proliferative phase which lasts about 6 weeks. It utilizes fibroblastic proliferation to produce a structural scaffolding of collagen and other proteins.

3rd phase: Remodeling phase which lasts up to 15 months. It incorporates stem cells and various other growth factors to build the strength, mass, thickness, and health of previously damaged tissues.

Do I Qualify for this Therapy?

Prolotherapy can be beneficial, if:

  • you are currently under medication for ligament, tendon, or joint issues
  • you have been experiencing pain or weakness/instability in your ligaments, tendons, or joints that have lasted more than 6 weeks
  • manual or physical therapy only provide temporary relief
  • you’ve had surgery but haven't gotten much relief from back pain
  • your joint pain worsens when you exercise, but improves when you rest

Why Should I Consider Prolotherapy?

Prolotherapy is an all-natural and completely safe procedure that strengthens joints and helps the body repairs itself, resulting in diminished pain. This therapy also improves the back and joints' general mobility and function.

In addition, Prolotherapy is a same-day procedure. No general anesthesia is required and most patients don’t need post-operative pain medication. You are ready to go home within a few hours after injections.

Unlike pharmaceutical drugs, Prolotherapy has zero to no side effects, as the solution injected is completely benign.

Our Physicians at RMG have helped hundreds of patients suffering from pain, discomfort and stretched joints, ligament or tendon problems. Prolotherapy directly addresses the cause of instability and can help weakened areas by aiding in the  formation of new fibrous tissues that results into permanent stabilization of the joints and ligament. In conclusion, prolotherapy can help you live a pain free life.
